Will You Get One? 1.75 Million NYers Will Receive Checks Averaging $270 New Yorkers may want to keep an eye on their mailbox in the coming weeks as the state gears up to send out relief checks to low income families aimed at combating inflation and improving affordability. The New York Department of Taxation and Finance will soon begin sending out checks with an average payment of $270 per eligible recipient to those who received the Empire State Child Credit and/or the Earned Income Credit on their 2021 state tax returns. Long Island Man Sentenced For Firing Gun At Police Officer A Long Island man who fired a gun at a police officer during a foot pursuit will spend the next three decades in prison. David Serrant, age 23, of Freeport, was sentenced to 29 years behind bars in Nassau County Court Tuesday, Aug. 30. It followed his May 2022 jury conviction on charges of felony attempted assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon stemming from an incident in February 2018. Tanker With Thousands Of Gallons Of Tar Crashes In Hudson Valley A sticky situation was averted when a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of tar overturned on a Hudson Valley roadway. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency Friday, Sept. 9, after polio was found in more wastewater samples.
